Since 2024, medical graduates in Italy have been eligible to apply for medical residency programs in the United States as the Italian university system is subject to evaluation by ANVUR (National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes), which has obtained accreditation from the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).
Accreditation by the WFME is an essential requirement for allowing medical graduates in Italy to access medical residency programs in the United States.
This accreditation is one of the prerequisites set by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), the body that enables foreign graduates to take the exams required to obtain ECFMG Certification, which is necessary to practice medicine in the U.S.
